What is love without God?

Some months ago I was having a conversation with someone and he told me that he doesn’t believe in God. I was taken aback because that was the first time I heard someone (a Nigerian for that matter) tell me that. I had thought it was mainly particular to the western world. He went on to tell me that what he believes in is love. Love is good but, can you say you know how to love when you don’t know God?

1 John 4:7& 8 (MSG) says:
“My beloved friends, let us continue to love each other since love is of God. Everyone who loves is born of God and experiences a relationship with God. The person who refuses to love doesn’t know the first thing about God, because God is love-so you can’t know him if you don’t love”.

Clear and straight forward. This means that if you say you know how to love and you don’t know God then you are just deceiving yourself. Likewise if you say you know God and you refuse to show love then you don’t truly know God like you claim to do. That same 1 John 4 in verse 20 & 21 tells us that:

“If anyone boasts, “I love God”, and goes right on hating his brother or sister, thinking nothing of it, he is a liar. If he won’t love the person he can see, how can he love the God he can’t see? The command we have from Christ is blunt: Loving God includes people. You’ve got to love both”.

So you see that it’s not possible to love God if you don’t love your fellow human. If you don’t even love yourself there is no way you can say you love God because he is the one who created you and he created you in his image. Likewise, you can’t say you believe in love but not in God. God is love. What kind of love are you showing without God? Obviously not the right kind of love. God is our role model when it comes to love. I don’t think there is any greater love than his kind of love. John 15: 13 (KJV) says:

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends”.

Whenever we do anything love related, we are supposed to be reflecting God. That is why you can’t say you love a lady but then want her to have sexual relationship with you before marriage. If you truly love her you wouldn’t want her to sin against God by committing fornication and if you truly love God you won’t want to willingly sin against him. The true kind of love doesn’t cause you to sin. Love without God is a fabricated kind of love.

Anyone who reads this and doesn’t believe in God, my prayer is that you get to encounter him and he reveals what love truly is to you. And anyone who says they love God but finds it difficult to show love to people I also pray that God gives you a change of heart.
